Company History

Having a wonderful time taking in all that Alaska has to offer

1999

Ron Holway’s dream as a gold miner was to preserve a little bit of gold mining history for future generations to see.

In the spring of 1999, Tom Hall approached his friend, Ron Holway, who was a lifelong gold miner, about moving Ron’s 1937 gold dredge to Skagway. The dredge was sitting in the Klondike gold fields north of Dawson City.

Ron’s dream as a gold miner was to preserve a little bit of gold mining history for future generations to see.

Tom and Ron convinced other friends and family to move and reconstruct this historical dredge from Dawson City to the shores of the Skagway River.

2000 / 2001

In May 2000, the Klondike Gold Dredge (KGD) opened for tours.

In August 2001, KGD was offered for the first time as an add-on tour on a cruise line.

In subsequent years other cruise lines picked up KGD dredge and gold panning tours. As demand increased, tours were expanded and refined, and additional heated panning sheds and shopping spaces were created.

2009 / 2010

In 2009, a brewery and restaurant were added to the facility and the name of the company was changed to the Klondike Gold Fields (KGF) since the facility became over the years a destination with a variety of things to see and do as opposed to a single tour.

KGF continued to expand and added a sled dog demonstration and a 40-below experience in 2010.

TODAY

Over time, the Klondike Gold Fields continued to change and today has been renamed Alaska 360 mirroring our mission statement: to offer guests of all ages a unique mix of educational, interactive and entertaining tourism products truly bringing alive some of Alaska’s highlights – all at one location: Alaska 360’s Dredge Town.

Through excellence, we endeavor to create exceptional and unforgettable experiences, every single time, all at an outstanding excursion value. From what started as one man’s dream to preserve the history of placer mining in the Klondike, we have grown to having the vision of bringing many aspects of Alaska’s history and the daily life of Alaskan’s today to our guests.

Today, Alaska 360s’ employees are dedicated to making Dredge Town – Your Day in Skagway where guests journey back to the 1890s with period buildings, costumed guides and a wealth of activities and tours. By honoring the miners of yore as well as the Alaskans of today that make this state so special, Ron Holway’s dream has been fulfilled.
